Some of the plans can be built with basic tools, but not all of them, and it depends on the project. Ted's Woodworking is sold as a large collection covering many project types, so the tool demands vary a lot from plan to plan. Check each plan's tool and cut list before you commit lumber or money.
What "basic tools" usually means
For this page, assume a basic kit is a tape measure, square, handsaw or circular saw, drill/driver, clamps, a sander and a hammer. A table saw, router, jointer or planer moves a project beyond that.
What to check in any plan
- Tools list. If the plan lists no tools at all, that is a gap. Work out from the steps what you would need.
- Joinery. Butt joints with screws and glue suit basic tools. Dados, mortise-and-tenon and dovetails usually need more equipment or skill.
- Cut list and dimensions. Look for clear measurements and standard lumber sizes, so you are not milling stock yourself.
- Diagrams and steps. Can you follow the order of assembly without guessing?
- Finish and hardware. Note any specialty hardware you would have to buy.
Where basic-tool builds tend to sit
| Project type | Typical tool demand | What to confirm |
|---|---|---|
| Simple shelves, boxes, benches | Often modest | Joinery type and cut count |
| Outdoor planters, simple benches | Often modest to moderate | Wood type and fasteners for weather |
| Sheds and larger structures | Moderate to heavy | Framing detail, site prep, local building rules |
| Furniture with fitted joints | Often more than basic | Whether the plan offers a simpler joint option |
That table is a general guide, not a statement about specific plans in the pack. Open the plan itself and judge it.

If a plan calls for a tool you have not used before, learn it properly first, and wear eye and hearing protection. For sheds or anything structural, check local permit and building requirements, and consider asking a qualified professional.
Before you buy
Because the collection is large, browsing a few sample plans in your own skill range tells you more than the headline count does. Confirm what is currently included, the format and the terms on the official site, since details can change. Our review covers how the pack stacks up, and the quantity-versus-quality question matters here too.
